Unspoken Thing
The hardest thing about life is
when the person who gave you the most memories
becomes a memory.

Kurama and Hiei accidentally hurt one another's feelings take 8 million

[personal profile] jaganshi 2024-06-03 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)

Hiei had arrived back at the compound nearly five days ago, intent on visiting his sister and nieces and nephews. He had also aspired to spend some time with Kurama maybe, since they had left off on a good foot, or at least he thought. The fire demon had arrived to sink, tired, into a cushion on the tatami, and offered a hot cup of tea for his weary bones, only to hear that Kurama had left a few days ago and had not returned.

Of course, there is no reason to think that Kurama had left intentionally to avoid him, there was no way that the fox had even known he was in the way. But it still makes him uneasy. The thought that they had left off on what he felt was a good foot, only to find the redhead gone without an explanation and with what little he had packed away. There is thankfully very little time to dwell on these things, though, with the children constantly tugging at his heels to do this or that with him.

Hiei is thankful for their distraction at the very least, the constant tug of war for his attention an easy excuse to forget about his worries over Kurama’s absence. He had said he would be here, no matter what, and while Hiei knows that was sincere, he can’t help but feel some validation at his own leanings toward cynicism. Of course Kurama wouldn’t stay around after he had plainly asked if he didn’t want anything to do with him anymore.

It was fair, even, that the redhead wouldn’t bother to stick around knowing that possibility was on the table. He couldn’t say for sure that he would bother in that case, even with their past considered on top of it all.

Hiei is seated in the shade of a tree, accompanied by Hina as her siblings train or otherwise rough house in the field, their mother away on errands and leaving her brother to keep track of her brood. With the Jagan in play, this is easy enough even as he watches her examine his claws and hand, especially the imprint of the dragon on the back of his hand.

"Can I have a dragon too?" She asks, ever so innocent as large red eyes look up at him, genuinely wishing to have something that matches with her much-beloved uncle. Hiei, thankfully, will leave out the gorey detail that she would have to take it from him, humming in a moment of feigned thought.

"No, I don't think so. Though there may be an ice dragon I don't know about, if you wanted to train in a few years."

Had they not been in the strange situation they are now, Hiei's mind wouldn't have wandered so dangerously so quickly. Or at the very least, he would have been able enough to send the fox a message and ask where he is and call it there. Instead he is here with the children, thankful for the distraction that they provide even though he's had to break up a few overly spirited bouts of 'training' here and there.

Only enough that Yukina won't be able to complain about the children being bruised or asking him what exactly he was allowing, of course. Hiei may be their uncle, but he was still all too aware of what challenges they would face if they ever went into the demon world themselves. It may be something of an eventuality, and in particular for the girls, Hiei wanted to be sure that they were ready should any threat come upon them. Of course they would be more than likely entering under their Uncle's nearly famous and very dangerous wing, but it never hurt to make them a threat all their own from where Hiei stood.

The fire demon's eyes dart to acknowledge the fox before Kurama reaches them, Hina already smiling and waving from her position in her uncle's lap with enthusiasm.

"Uncle Kurama - you're back!" Hiei looks bemused at her enthusiastic hellos at the very least, thankful to possibly no longer have to answer any questions on the Dragon for a little while.

"Yukina was wondering where you had gone." ... and so was Hiei, but he is obviously not going to advertise that.

“I have broken up more self inflicted spats today to think of pushing harder.” The children bickering was absolutely nothing new, but when it came to training they seemed to take after both their father and uncle. Trash talking until the other party had enough and instead decided to confront the problem head on and usually with their fists. If these were not Yukina’s children entrusted to him for their well being while she was gone he may have allowed it, but instead he finds himself reluctantly playing referee.

“Kazuma.” Hiei doesn’t have to be particularly loud to be heard, at least, unphased as Hina again takes his hand in rapt fascination about the dragon. “That was sloppy. Focus.”

A tall order when he’s trying to be nosey about what they’re talking about, he’s sure, but it will never stop Hiei calling him out either.

Hina, in typical child fashion loses interest rather quickly when the answer isn’t very fantastical, a quiet ‘oooohhh’ following Kurama’s explanation. Luckily for Yukina, Hiei had shown up and allowed her some extra peace of mind and some peace and quiet on her errands for once.

“I’m going to reach out to Touya, soon, I think.” Speaking of learning, Hiei’s eyes turn from his niece and back to Kurama. “I can only help Hina so much, and if she is so focused on having a dragon -“

The little ice apparition breaks in to a laugh as he says it, gentling the fire apparition’s expression in the process.

“I would happily give up my title to Hina.” Since he hated it anyway, despite how “dragon king” had proliferated in the demon world since their string of joint kingships.

Call it a sort of passive revenge on the ice maidens who had cast him out - enabling one of their own to become a fighter if she so wished. Well... and if her mother would allow it. Hiei could not hope to stand up against Yukina if that is not the path she wanted Hina to go down, though she may meet her match (pun intended) in her daughter. Any hope of Kurama having time to unpack before the children are ready for gifts is perhaps put in limbo at a moment's notice, unfortunately for the redhead, as the little ice maiden lights up at the word 'gifts.'

'You brought back presents?! Kazu he brought back presents!' Hiei sighs, giving Kurama a look as if he's just inconvenienced him to have to play bad cop, here, a hand placed on Hina's shoulder to keep her in place.

"Hina, it isn't as if you've never gotten a gift before. Wait a little longer. Kazuma I haven't said you're done, yet." A pause, and while Hiei is issuing orders it seems he will give Kurama his walking orders as well. "Go. I'll hold them here as long as I can."

Which.. may be shorter than usual considering he is currently sitting in the shade feeling oddly overheated for a fire demon. It is easy to play off as lounging while his charges play and train, taking his 'off' time seriously for once even as the fire demon himself wonders what the hell is going on with him. It isn't as though he has much experience with being sick, typically running too hot for most ailments demon or human to even touch him. The fire demon is able to hold them off thorough bouts of whining and begging for training to be done, complaints about the temperature or even that he is being difficult on purpose for shorter than he may normally, his patience growing thinner as his head begins to swim.

Sending Kurama away was multi-purpose, actually, though the children do not yet realize that little fact for what it is.

If the fox were outside he might be clued in that something was wrong by the fact that Hiei is not hot on the children's heels, in fact lagging behind as Kazuma and Hina race to see what their gifts are. Despite all of his efforts to keep his head on straight and act as though nothing is wrong, his inability to focus has turned into dizziness upon standing, as well as the knowledge that he is incredibly hot, uncomfortably so, in fact.

The fire demon goes from stubbornly fighting to maintain normality to nearly lost in the long grass as consciousness leaves him, Hina's laughing tease that she is going to beat him back for once lost in the panicked shriek that follows, trajectories reversed as they head backward instead of toward their presents in a quick reversal.

If Hina's shriek doesn't summon him, Kazuma at least has the clarity to call out for help.

'Kurama! He fainted!'

Thankfully the fire demon is not awake to see the fuss he’s started, both of the children at his side to try and wake him. It goes unnoticed, of course, and neither of the children make note of his high body temperature before Kurama moves in to touch. Of course for Kazuma and Hina, with their different but advantageous abilities, Hiei’s body temperature is not really of note for physical harm. Hina takes a moment to grouse, even, huffing as she notes : “I told him he felt too hot, earlier.

One day she will learn that her uncle does not listen, even to people who mean well.

The grass around him is beginning to wilt and change color by the time Kurama reaches them, both children unsure of how to proceed without guidance. In their experience Hiei had never been in such a condition in front of them, which only adds to the stress and confusion of the moment. The occasional injury had only been bloody and easily healed- a fever that leads to him passing out is entirely new for all of them.

“You’re burned.” Kazuma points out, brows furrowing in concern and seeming to begin to wonder how they would even move him as it was. Though Hiei is small, he is heavy, and with dead weight it may be harder than expected for Kazuma to move him on his own.

Hina’s fussing is easily ended as Kurama gives her an objective, being given a way to help instead of being asked to stand aside as good a reason as ever to focus.

“Ok. I can do that I think.” She nods and sets to work as soon as Kurama turns to her brother, easily beginning to chill the area around Hiei first. This way she prevents a fire while also insulating him from the ground, then beginning the harder work of combatting her uncle’s high body temperature and taming it. Thankfully Hina is disciplined like her mother, focusing on her work as Kazuma keeps watch for any worsening symptoms.

Thankfully Hiei’s body cuts them a moment of slack, mitigated by Hina’s diligent work of bringing his temperature to something more manageable even for a fire demon.

Instead of further advisories of something getting worse, Kurama is more likely to hear Kazuma’s encouragements for his sister on his return. Though Kazuma may look like his uncle… thankfully his personality takes mostly after his namesake.

“You’re doing really great, Hina! I can’t feel as much heat coming off of him now.”

Thankfully Hiei doesn't budge as Kurama carries him inside, lost to a long-in-coming fever that keeps him asleep. The deep fever keeps him from dreams, and that alone is somewhat of a blessing considering what he is capable of without much thought to the how or who is involved. Kurama has dutiful helpers in the meantime before Yukina returns, Hina and Kazuma ever concerned and attendant to what the fox needs, when he needs it. The activity has a way of making sure they have little time to think too hard about the current situation or fuss too deeply about their uncle's recovery.

In its own way, Hiei's ever-flat and unshakeable, steady way of handling injuries they had seen him with before made the children, too, unshakeably sure that he would recover. It was all a matter of time, so far as they were concerned, before he was sitting up and scolding all of them for worrying so much in the first place.

Poor little Hina is exhausted when Yukina makes her hurried return, diligent in keeping the area around Hiei cooled until her mother can take over. It isn't long until the children are put to bed, without much fuss on Hina's end as she'd nearly fallen asleep in her dinner despite being ravenous for it.

Hiei's eyes open only a sliver, many hours later, a small grunt leaving him as he immediately (and weakly) attempts to sit up. He is already shaking with exertion by the time Yukina is pushing him back down, a cold hand on a still very blazing body.

"What are you doing?! Lay back down!"

[personal profile] jaganshi 2024-06-29 12:23 am (UTC)(link)

Hiei only vaguely hears the goings on after Yukina forces him to lay back down. He's unwilling to continue to fight her, and beyond that... he felt too bad to attempt to keep sitting up and bickering with her. His head swims and discomfort lingers in his joints and under his skin in a way that is unfamiliar in the least pleasing way. So far he would rate his first experience with illness in the gutter and not one centimeter above it.

Hearing Kurama say he is leaving... Well he doesn't blame him. What is there to do if he is simply feverish and down? They surely couldn't have anything like a discussion, and Hiei doesn't expect the fox to stay around and take care of him with where they stand now. It wouldn't really make sense, so far as he was concerned.

While the fox demon is away Hiei sweats it out and Yukina, predictably, does not take a rest. She spends too much time (in his opinion), fretting over keeping him cool and alternating cold cloth on his neck, his forehead, where ever she can lay them to mitigate some of his fever. No amount of croaking to her to go and rest seems to move her, as she only tuts at him to rest and insists that he drinks water in the moments when he is more lucid. Eventually, the fever runs its course and works its way through him, and Yukina finds it within herself to pull out a futon to sleep where he can get her attention should he need to. Naturally, Hiei does not get her when his fever turns to chills, instead opting to pull over any nearby blankets and curl up under them to shiver.

... Since this is his first experience with cold... it's rather miserable, but not as miserable as his recovery from the Jagan. Besides, Yukina needed her rest.

"Nn-" Hiei makes some semblance of a small, miserable noise as Kurama asks if he can sit up. If he's honest he's surprised to hear the fox's voice right now, so soon after he'd left in the first place. If he didn't so distinctly smell him, he would be pondering on whether his mind was going from the previous episode of overwhelming heat, or maybe if dehydration was starting to take his mind to strange places.

Of all the times he's heard the humans they associate with talk about how miserable being sick with a cold is.. he finally believes them. Assuming this is a cold at all, of a cold as demons experienced them.

With great effort, Hiei pushes himself up to sitting, doing everything in his power to keep himself quiet despite how he wants to groan with sore muscles and joints as he does so. He wants to bring the blankets up and around his shoulders, struggling weakly to shuffle them up to where he can cocoon properly on the futon where Kurama had left him a few hours earlier, just in a very different state.

"That's where you went?" His voice is quiet, trying to make sure his sister can get her sleep, hoarse and dry since he's refused to call out to her to ask for more water.

"Why are your hands wrapped?" The answer should seem obvious enough, really - either he had burnt him, or he was trying to protect himself from the possibility of one, but it doesn't occur to him at the moment. His mind is too wrapped up in how miserable he feels and questions of why, again, Kurama had come back to take care of him like this when he'd not all that long ago explicitly said that he wasn't sure if he wanted him around in the same capacity anymore.

The possibility of warmth, of course, draws the fire demon's focus. Clutching the blankets slightly tighter he nods to agree before wondering what the ingredients were. That implicit trust in Kurama's ability to at least take the edge off hadn't changed, no matter how fraught the rest of their relationship was now.

"What's now versus later, at this point?" Trying something was better than sitting there and just gritting through it for no reason, of course, though he does have a classic moment as Kurama says he should sit back, face screwing up in to a scowl at the suggestion.

"I am fine."

“I’m always hot ..” Hiei says it as more of an excuse than anything else. An easy way to shrug off why he had ignored the fact that he had felt it too, but had opted to ignore it instead of doing anything about it. However, the fox bringing it up so bluntly seems to push Hiei off the subject of the other man wrapping his hands.

At least for a little while.

“What do you mean?” Now it seems to click about why Kurama had left, for a few hours. Clearly he’d had something in mind that may be able to help him along in getting better… but now he has to wonder why there is such a time frame on it. “Why does it need time like that?”

He is impatient to be better and back on track, obviously. There’s very little time, in his mind, for him to be down and in bed like this. No there isn’t a looming tournament, or a new threat, but the fact was that Hiei did not want to be laid up like this for very long.

“No… I skipped breakfast.” By already being outside, training through the haze in his mind, attempting to ignore the problem in to non-existence.

“But I can try.”

"... The right combination?" Look. He trusts Yukina and Kurama to be looking out for his best interest amid this mysterious illness, but finding the right combination seems a lot like experimentation. He supposes it is rare that someone with his abilities is ill like this, which naturally means that there is very little in the way of known herbs and mixtures that could help. If this is all necessary to get him back on his feet again, though... he isn't going to fight it much.

The fire demon will conveniently leave out the fact that he isn't feeling all that peckish, either - he'd caught that first reaction, whether Kurama had tried to recover or not, and wasn't trying to make the reactions any worse. Or get himself a lecture the moment he was awake again and Yukina wasn't sleeping nearby.

Hiei sniffs as Kurama returns, trying to gauge what is in the tea from smell alone. It doesn't come up as a fruitful venture, of course, the smell of bread and a mix of something unknown to him hitting his nostrils. Kurama making tea for him wasn't all that unusual or out of the ordinary in their former life and yet here he is, staring down at the small plate in front of him as if he can't find it within himself to even nibble at it at the moment.

"What's in the tea?"
jaganshi: (high speed)

[personal profile] jaganshi 2024-06-30 12:47 am (UTC)(link)

Hiei looks rightly a bit chided as Kurama asks if the ingredients would even mean anything to him. The answer is, obviously, no - but it’s never stopped the fire demon from being a stickler anyway. He doesn’t mention the fox’s close quarters or how comfortable he is on the futon next to him, though it does make him straighten up some.

It takes great effort, and though Hiei feels like he should maybe take greater note of how physically weak he feels… he’s already here. What does it matter now when he’s already been so exposed for not mentioning it? Kurama no doubt knows from how he holds himself by now anyway.

“You aren’t concerned you might catch something?” Trying to give Kurama a little out, here. As if he may be able to shoo the Youko away if there was a chance he could get sick as well. He’s had the same thought for Yukina, but… she would no doubt laugh in his face if he attempted it.

“It’s toast.” Hiei answers blandly, but picks the bread up anyway and puts it to his mouth. It’s clear from the small bite he takes and how slowly he’s chewing that hunger isn’t gnawing at him, or anything close at the moment, but he will dutifully take little bites to appease the fox. It takes him a little longer to give in and touch the tea, but thankfully dry bread will coax him along from being stubborn.

“It doesn’t taste terrible.” As if Hiei’s scales are at all what they should be on flavor.
jaganshi: (high speed)

[personal profile] jaganshi 2024-06-30 02:04 am (UTC)(link)

Hiei works through his piece of toast rather dutifully, at times alternating between his toast and the tea as a way to power through it despite how much his stomach is very much not craving food at the moment. It would be a concerning symptom to him if there wasn't a laundry list by now of things that weren't exactly right. Usually, he feels this way right before a big hibernation is about to hit, though he has no reason to rest like that as far as he can tell.

Surely the fire demon wouldn't think of something like his past century or so of anxiety and lacking sleep and rest as a reason that his body may be finally throwing up the white flag and deciding that it would force him to rest if he was not going to do it on his own terms. Hiei finishes the toast with a sigh, as if put out by having to do something like eating, which he typically relishes in. The tea he's still sipping slowly, fighting through how full he feels to finish it.

"You don't have to, you know." Sit here and fuss about making sure he is getting better, he means. Hiei pauses for a moment as Yukina shifts under her blanket, sitting still and quiet until she settles again so that she, at least, can get her sleep.

"You were just talking about having work to do and conferences planned..."
